Example: Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Enterprise
The following example describes a licensing scenario of two virtual machines (VMs) with installations of the Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Enterprise application.
In the compliance summary of the application Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Enterprise, we see that:
- The metric of the application is set to Number of processor cores.
- There are no (0) licenses with that metric for this application.
- There is a license requirement of 8 licenses.
- There are 6 cores.
- There are 0 licenses available for coverage.
- We are 8 licenses short.
License requirements
The application is detected on hardware with a total number of 6 cores, but we have a minimum requirement of 8 licenses. Since there is a requirement of minimum 4 licenses per VM that is consuming Microsoft SQL Server, 2 extra licenses are added for SQL Server VM adjustment.
For information on the consumers of this application:
- Click the Licenses tab, and then click Tracking.
A list of all consumers that require a license is shown.
We see that there are two consumers with Entitlement state set to Not covered.
For detailed information:
- On the Licenses tab and in the Tracking view, click the arrow next to the Required number of licenses (in this example 4).
In the License requirements box, the SQL Server VM adjustment appears.
Decide on licensing
To decide on how to cover the VMs in the best way, you need to consider how they are set up. For support, use the report License tracking per computer, and add the columns Datacenter name and Host computer name from the Column selector.
We decide to cover the two VMs with individual licensing, so we purchase and register a license for the Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Enterprise application with:
- quantity = 8
- metric = Number of processor cores
- and active Software Assurance (SA).
We assign licenses to the two VMs according to their hardware requirements and according to the rule of Minimum requirement which is four (4) licenses per VM.
After a completed compliance calculation, we see that the application Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Enterprise now has full coverage.
To verify that the consumers are covered:
- Click the Licenses tab, and then click Tracking.
We see that the Entitlement state of the two VMs is changed to Covered.
